Known Soapbox Races in the UK and Ireland

I've compiled a google map of all of the soapbox races I know about in the UK and Ireland. At the moment, I've found 25, mostly through googling for "uk soapbox" and associated terms.

Nearly all of the events are community based and focus on fun and themed/novelty carts. There are massive variations in the rules, with one race featuring a water section where the carts have to be rowed !

The map is shown below. If you have any additions, updates, clarifications or corrections please let us know.

For further details on individual events, please click on the markers in the map below. Please note that nearly all of the races are not connected with the SCA in any way. For entry details etc, please contact the race organisers directly.

Stephen, are the carties and gravity sidecars going to be running together or will they be kept apart at CSE?

SCA Championship?

I'm currently drafting a set of rules for a Championship seires to be run next year. The basci idea is for teams to get points for competing at events throughout the year, with the chamionship being awarded to the team with the highest number of points. At the moment, it looks like there will be three races at which points are available - Catterline, Border Bogie and Cairngorm, although of course others could be added.

At the moment I'm thinking along the following lines;

  • Points for aggregate times in time trial competitions (i.e. Catterline).
  • Points for final position in race competitions (i.e. Cairngorm).
  • 1st place = 5 points ... 5th place = 1 point. Plus 2 points for competing.
  • Must compete in at least 50% of races.

Any thoughts?

Scottish Carties at Cadwell 2009

Looks like there will be quite a strong representation from Scotland at Cadwell this year. Team Weasel will be there with two carties - Flying Ferret and SCA Bandit, plus Alford Bowling Club and Team Rooket as well.

I think we should bring our own piper along. We can have our own mini competition too - a race within a race!
